I painted this collection to honour of one of my favourite authors, Joan Didion. Her work has brought me so much joy and comfort, and I have titled the pieces using excerpts from her writing.
Didion embodies growth, adaptation and change, while maintaining connections to each person she has “become”. She was tough yet soft, marveling at once at drooping tulips and a whipping sheet in the wind. She valued physical beauty in the spaces around her, and was both a city and country girl, always a little displaced. Perhaps this is what I most relate to these days.
In terms of materials and method, these pieces are an exploration towards moving away from the confines of stretched canvas, they offer a looser, more raw connection between art and viewer. The expressions made on the canvas are done with impulsivity yet overall balance. I kept the colours grounded in natural and organic tones but punctuated spring hues and pastels and signature black gestures, because I love the drama.
