Eclipse Series

Outside of the yellow walls the ocean air sat heavy, gripping their shoulders with what once felt like comfort. Its ceaselessness, its moods, those white caps spying on them from across the road, truck wheels on gravel against the massive sky. They had the forest, which made them laugh. They touched its moss and mushrooms, picked its flowers with warm hands. They asked about deer, about who led who and how they knew to get home. About the shields that sat high, sun splintering through their failing walls. At night, they’d leave their windows open to hear the white caps roar and the snaps of branches under animals, wandering in circles.
